Frequently Asked Questions
How does it work?
Congestion or tension in a particular part of the body is mirrored in congestion or tension in a particular part of the foot. The sensitive, trained hands of a reflexologist can detect tiny deposits and imbalances in the feet. By working on these areas of the feet, using hands only, the reflexologist can help to release blockages and aim to restore the free flow of energy to the whole body.
The way the therapy is applied, and the effect it will have on the body, is unique to each individual client. But normally it is expected that tensions in the body will ease, and circulation and elimination will improve.
What happens during a reflexology session?
Your first visit will begin with a consultation to discuss any health issues you may have, and to check that you are a suitable candidate for the therapy. You will then make yourself comfortable in a special reclining chair, in the relaxing environment of the therapy room. I will begin to work on your feet, or your hands if necessary, using thumbs and fingers and in the case of Advanced techniques, additionally using the knuckles. Cream is only used during Vertical Reflexology and for some of the Advanced Reflexology techniques.
Any discomfort you may feel will be fleeting, and will be an indication of congestion or imbalance in a corresponding part of your body. For the most part, you will find the sensation pleasant and soothing.
How long will a session last?
My reflexology sessions usually last about 1 hour but I am happy to spend longer if required. I never want anyone to feel they are being rushed and my clients really appreciate this. My aim is to make everyone who comes for reflexology comfortable and relaxed and afterwards, to feel they have had a relaxing, happy experience. Depending on your body's needs, I may recommend that you undertake a few sessions. In some cases, shorter, more frequent sessions can be arranged at a reduced cost.
What sort of people can benefit from reflexology?
Reflexology acts as a complement to conventional medical diagnosis and treatment. It may help with a wide range of both acute and chronic conditions, and is suitable for children and adults of all ages. With the development of baby reflex, infants as young as four weeks may benefit from treatment.
An ever increasing number of people from all walks of life are turning to this completely safe, natural therapy as a way of relaxing, balancing and harmonising the body.
What happens after the session?
After the first, or subsequent sessions, your body may respond in a very definite way. Most people have a feeling of wellbeing, envigoration, feel energised and relaxed. Some may feel lethargic, nauseous or even tearful and some may even having 'flu-like symptoms. All these reactions are a transitory phase and may be part of a healing process/crisis and should be considered in a positive light. Whatever the nature of your reaction, it is vital that you feed this information back to me as it will indicate to me how your body is responding to the therapy, and will allow me to devise a course of action tailored to your needs.
Is Reflexology Safe?
Reflexology is completely safe. Practitioners, such as myself, trained in the Original Ingham Method® of Reflexology have the knowledge and the skill to work with people of all ages, from newborn to the elderly, including the provision of professional reflexology during pregnancy, palliative care and chemotherapy. Many NHS hospitals are now offering Reflexology to patients following chemotherapy.
Reflexology is complementary to allopathic medicine, not a replacement. Many ailments have been found to respond well to Reflexology though, because of ASA rules, I am not allowed to mention them here.
